Type of Hacienda:Sisal, Cattle
Location: Chenkú is in the north of the city of Merida, on 35th street between 30th and 34th of the residential area bearing it’s name.
History:It was originally conceived as a ranch for cattle and horses and later switched to sisal exploitation. Refurbished and rebuilt, it was during the second half of the 20th century the setting for large festivities, involving the participation of national figures from politics and show business. What survives of the complex today is the main house, the pond, the machine room, the chimney and two annex buildings whish were perhaps warehouses or the administrator’s house. There are spacious interiors and a monumental colonnade at the rear that looks out over the corral, the presence of which at the front and in the rear seems to bear witness to the hacienda’s evolution from cattle ranch to sisal hacienda.
