Chichi de los lagos

State: Yucatan

Type of Hacienda: Sisal

Service: Tourists Visit

Location: Chichí de los Lagos is located four kilometers north of the Yalahau lagoon, in the municipality of Homún, 45 kilometers southeast of Merida.

History:It takes its name, Chichí de los Lagos (“Lakes”) from its proximity to Yalahau lagoon and two other lesser bodies of water. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries on the orders of Marshal Figueroa and began to produce sisal in the 19th century. The main entrance is marked by a stone portico, stables, and a tunnel that communicates the rear patio with the main garden. Despite the date of its construction, the 18th century, the style is still colonial, with a colonnade of half-point arches and tiles added above. The chimney survives, and a wind-pump bears witness to times long gone. The chapel is notable, and on its façade we can see a well-preserved mural dating back to colonial times.
